Top 5 Things To Do In Stephenville

1. Tarleton State University

tarleton state university athletics stephenville texas

Tarleton State University is the heart of Stephenville. Tarleton was founded in 1899 by John Tarleton. Legend has it that John Tarleton had a pet duck named Oscar P that went everywhere with him and supposedly Oscar P is buried with John Tarleton. Students celebrate this legend by raising the spirit of Oscar P always led by the Purple Poo.

Tarleton State is full of tradition, some of the most famous are the Purple Poo and the Tarleton Plowboys. The Purple Poo tradition stems from the TTS/TTP spirit organization, this is a secret organization where the members conceal their identities until seniors unmasked at the Leadership and Service Award Ceremony in April. They are known for creating "Poo Signs" each Monday night and the signs appear on campus every Tuesday morning and they participate in most student life events. The Tarleton Plowboys tradition was established in 1984 and Plowboys are at every campus activity and sports event. You can always spot a Plowboy on campus because they are wearing their traditional white shirts, cowboy hats, and purple chaps.

Homecoming week brings a whole new set of traditions, such as the Silver Bugle Hunt, the Bonfire, and the Yell Contest. This week alone shows you what an amazing place Tarleton State is.

There is a reason Tarleton is known as the "Best Kept Secret in Texas", because it really is. Students get the hands on teaching, individual opportunities, history and tradition at this university that you won't find anywhere else. Go Texans and Bleed Purple!

This led to even them working with even more endagered species, such as the African Addax. The ranch didn't open to the public until 1984 but even still, the ranch kept to their mission of staying dedicated to the conservaton of species in peril, participate in scientific research, and training on responsible management of the animals, natural resources and public education.

When you go to the ranch, you can choose to drive through yourself in your own vehicle or take a guided group tour. On these tours, you will be able to see the 46 animal species that call the ranch home and you may even get the chance to feed the giraffes! Admission to the park is $19.95 for children and $24.95 for adults and that includes 1 bag of feed per vehicle entering.
